Has anyone tried Magnesium to help with anxiety and panic attacks?

I am having a lot of anxiety attacks and a couple of panic attacks. My Dr prescribed zoloft, but what do i do in the mean time, while it is getting in my system. i read about Magnesium, and B6 and B12… has anyone tried these things? What works for you? Please, I need some advice.
Also, i just had a baby four weeks ago. and i am not nursing.

I’ve been on medicine for five years, and as i believe it helped, I believe its also a lot of mind tricks. Anxiety is probably one of the worst feelings in the world, i really reccommend stepping outside yourself for a few seconds, checking if the situation really calls for the amount of stress your putting yourself through, and relax knowing you will do as much as you can and that’s the best you can do. Medicine can help, but you have to be in the right mind set, try and be strong :).

apparently magnesium on its own its great. it will reduce your blood pressure and not make your heart race or throb so much. it also relaxes you. you wanna get about 250-300 mg of mg a day for a female.

I honestly don’t know about the magnesium, but the vitamin b in high doses should be great, also herbs known for calming chamomile should be worth a try

no, im on xanax and effexor xr.
but, magnesium is needed for hundreds of your body’s basic functions, including regulating your heart and blood pressure and helping to metabolize sugar and fats. It also helps your nervous system and combats such problems as insomnia and anxiety.
    so it should help :]
    best of luck to you.

I have heard that B vitamins are good as they are called the “stress” vitamins.

I believe magnesium is good too but you would have to have your blood levels checked first. You don’t want to take something if you aren’t lacking in it.

Maybe just eating foods rich in those vitamins would be better for you.

    Ask your doc for suggestions.

no, none of those supplements, and I take them all, has ever done anything for my anxiety disorder…I take them for other reasons. Zoloft will take four to six weeks to produce any results…and as you are nursing, it is not appropriate for you to take any of the medications intended for primary treatment of anxiety. I would suggest you either find a cognitive behavioral therapist to learn the skills for controlling panic disorder, or failing that, get a good book on panic disorder. The one I recommend is Mind Over Mood, by Dennis Greenberger, PhD.

Take the med as your Dr told you to, and if you feel it’s not working quick enough then call and ask for something faster acting to get you through till the Zoloft kicks in. Don’t use minerals and vitamins, without the Dr’s ok- sometimes they can interact with meds you are taking and make them not work correctly. Your best bet is to call your Dr and tell him/her what’s going on. Lots of hormone changes after having a baby, so don’t beat yourself up over it, just call and get something that will work for you NOW when you need it.

Hoping you get quick action from your meds.

Magnesium is great whether it helps with anxiety or not, but you have to have good calcium intake for your body to be able to absorb it proprely.

My boyfriend used to take magensium-calcium supplements (that way you get both!) and it helped him alot with his anxiety. I would definitely try this before resorting to medication. It’s cheaper, and easier on your body and your system needs magnesium anyway!

Yes, the B vitamins can help. I have tried them, and they basically just take the edge off your bodies reaction to anxiety.

Another thing to mention… If you anxiety started post-partum, and continues… make sure to talk to your Doc about it. I had post-partum depression that came out in the form of OCD. It’s called Post-Partum OCD, and it’s more common than people think. I never had any OCD before, and after I gave birth, i started having awful worries and fears that caused panic attacks. I was prescribe Zoloft and it helped IMMENSELY!! I wish you great luck!
